What is a community funded sanctuary and how does it work
What if 500 ordinary thoughtful people could protect 50 acres of land together
A community funded sanctuary is a model of collective land ownership where individuals contribute capital, time or skills to secure and steward land for shared, long term benefit.
This approach grows from the wider shift toward land stewardship in a burnt out world, where extraction gives way to guardianship.
Why Collective Rather Than Individual Ownership
Land is thought of as an out of reach purchase by most people. In the UK, agricultural land often exceeds £10,000 per acre. Property with even modest acreage is inaccessible to most people. Individual ownership concentrates land in fewer hands. Collective ownership redistributes access. In parts of rural Spain, land remains comparatively affordable. This creates a rare window of opportunity to secure sanctuary land before speculative demand increases. Collective ownership also spreads the responsibility and the fun of looking after land and the ecosystem on, in and under it.
The long term vision is not simply ownership, but participation in a modern, relational conservation model that includes humans as responsible stewards.
What Makes It a Sanctuary Rather Than an Investment
Not as an investment to get x or y % return each year but as a multi generational legacy. A community funded sanctuary is not a financial vehicle. There are no dividends. The return is access, restoration and legacy.
• The land is owned by the not for profit entity
• Members do not hold fractional deeds
• An asset lock protects it from resale or development
We form a community not for profit to buy land collectively for the benefit of all of us plus the generations to come. This is the premise of Elemental Foundation. Community funded land to be used as a sustainable land project in Spain. With the possibility of expanding into other countries too.
The biological and psychological importance of protecting such restorative environments is explored further in Why Silence and Stillness Are Biological Requirements Not Luxuries.
Think of it as more of a nature sanctuary membership. Donating money - or skills or time, buys land to be used for the overall membership. Whilst there will be connections to the local community, the benefit is for the members. Those who cared enough to take action. It is so easy to sit on the sidelines thinking ooh that is such a good idea yet do nothing. Action is needed by the right people with the same values and aligned action to create this ethical land use model. Where people and nature reconnect for mutual benefit.
The Membership Model
The community is formed of patrons, members and supporters:
Patrons
Provide significant financial support or corporate partnership.
Receive recognition and may use the space for aligned team gatherings or bursary sponsorship.
Members
Contribute financially to secure and steward the land.
Have access to book stays at a transparent, low cost weekly rate.
Supporters
Contribute time, skills or donations.
They don’t want to list their skills or art on the online directories
Help maintain, improve and promote the sanctuary.
The price of stays at the Foundation is the same for all. 2-3 bedroom self contained and self catering accommodation will be the core offer, estimated cost £200 per week utility and internet bills included. Add your transport costs, the food you want to eat and any coaching you want (ideally from the coaches network of the Foundation) on top to suit your preferences and budget.
All support is welcomed.
This community conservation structure ensures that stewardship is shared rather than centralised in a few hands.
Equality and Contribution
Everyone in the community is equal. Time contributions are valued equally. The project recognises practical labour, professional expertise and creative input as equally important forms of stewardship. Ethics come first, each member will be asked how they define a fulfilled life and what benefit they feel they will get from being part of the foundation. We must all be aligned on the important principles of a sustainable land project which lasts for generations if we are to make a success of this.
Long Term Protection
The land that is bought will be owned by the not for profit rather than by the members. The land is held by a not for profit entity with an asset lock, meaning it cannot be sold for private gain. This ensures protection beyond the founding members and prevents mission drift. This simplifies tax and legal obligations for us all. Elemental Foundation is not something which one dips into and dips out of, it is a way to form a legacy and to show that you care about nature and its connection to wellbeing. It also allows the land to be held in an asset lock so that it is permanently protected from overuse and development long after the founder members.
This form of ethical land preservation reflects the wider evolution toward human and relational conservation.
The Mission and Social Philosophy
The mission is simple: to protect quiet natural spaces and make access to restorative land independent of wealth. By acting collectively, we lower individual financial barriers while increasing long term impact.
Wellbeing should not be a luxury product. Access to nature should not depend on ownership.
